Lighthouses in Vieques
Vieques (Isla nena, small girl) a small island on the northern east coast of Puerto Rico is listed in the Guinness World records for having the brightest bioluminescent bay in the world. Vieques has 2 lighthouses, Mulas Point and Ferro Point both construction began by the Spanish government in 1896.
Mulas Point is an active lighthouse with a single red occulting light. It is located on the Isabel II section of Vieques. Its purpose was to navigate a safe passage between Vieques and Culebra, islands on the northeast coast of Puerto Rico. The lighthouse was remodeled several times but it is now closed to the public.
Ferro Point's construction was completed by the American government in 1899, after the Spanish American War. The lighthouse was built on a strategic located which had great value as it was a clear view into the Vieques Passage. Ferro Port was abandoned in 1926. The foundation developed cracks putting it in danger of collapsing.
